Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women worldwide. In Brunei Darussalam, cervical cancer is now the fifth most common cancer among women, compared to the second most common cancer among women in 2009. A decrease in the rate of these incidents is linked to the introduction of the National Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control Programme which began in 2009. The programme aims to prevent and reduce morbidity and mortality due to cervical cancer. This was shared by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health, in a message in conjunction with the Cervical Cancer Awareness Month Celebration.

According to the Minister of Health, the Humanpapilloma Virus, HPV Vaccination Programme was introduced in 2011, offering HPV vaccination to all women up to 45 years old. HPV vaccination coverage in Brunei Darussalam is high and consistent, exceeding 90 per cent every year, in line with the World Health Organization, WHO target of 90 per cent of 15-year-old girls being fully vaccinated. In line with technological developments, in August 2024, the Ministry of Health began introducing HPV test as the primary method of cervical cancer screening, replacing the PAP test previously used.

With the introduction of the HPV test, the Ministry of Health hopes that cervical cancer screening coverage in Brunei Darussalam can be increased as this method is more accepted by women, especially those who are less comfortable using a speculum. Increased screening coverage allows pre-cancer changes or cancer to be detected earlier so that treatment can be provided promptly, thereby reducing the burden of the disease. The Ministry of Health also updated and launched the National Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control Guidelines in January 2025. In addition, another new initiative has been introduced through the BruHealth application, which is the cervical cancer risk assessment feature. January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, celebrated annually worldwide with the aim of increasing public knowledge on cervical cancer, its preventive measures, and the importance of regular screening tests.
